A stunning, mid 1800s quilt in excellent condition. This applique work is done in a style called “trapunto” which means that the applique figures (the tulips, leaves and stems in this case) are stuffed with batting behind the fabric to raise them up off the white ground. The hand quilting is absolutely gorgeous, expertly done in a highly decorative and detailed composition.
The quilt was never used and has been washed once, right before acquisition, so it is freshly washed and bright white. Note that there is some minor condensing/shift of the trapunto stuffing from the washing process which is really only noticeable to the touch. There are some very light residual marks as shown and one bloom has two tiny rubbed spots. The border is a lovely, half triangle, sawtooth pattern. This is a stellar quilt and makes a gorgeous addition to a collection.
